This sword, crafted by the swordsmith Kanechika (兼周), is a treasured ancestral blade that was passed down through generations before being taken to war during World War II. Measuring 69.8 cm in length, this is an exceptionally long katana.
The swordsmith Kanechika was from the Mino tradition in Edo era, known for producing durable and efficient swords. The gunome-midare (irregular wave) hamon pattern reflects the Mino-den style, which was favored for its cutting performance in combat.
Unlike many swords that were refitted into standard military mounts, this one retains its original koshirae, featuring a finely woven tsuka with menuki decorations depicting traditional motifs. The leather field cover over the scabbard was a wartime modification, designed to protect the scabbard from harsh conditions in combat. Furthermore, the end of the scabbard has been reinforced with a metal cap, providing extra durability and protection.
This unique blend of historical fittings and wartime adaptation highlights the deep personal connection between the officer and his family’s heritage.
